Business Solutions for the plastic waste issue

On Thursday December 8th Enviu and Think Beyond Plastic co-hosted the Beyond Plastic Innovation Showcase in Rotterdam. The program consisted out of pitches from entrepreneurs with solutions to the plastic waste issue. The Innovation Showcase took place during the EU Conference on Plastics, where dedicated experts from the entire plastics value chain came together to co-create the right conditions to close the plastics loop and breakthroughs to be incorporated in the EU Strategy on Plastics.

Plastic has become an integral part of our lives. However, the consequences of plastic waste are disastrous to human life and our environment. According to recent finds by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, our oceans will contain more plastics than fish by 2050. Annually, around eight million metric tons of our plastic waste enter the oceans from land.

A challenge on this scale requires systems thinking and a global collaboration between the public and private sector, with the support of impact and equity investors, and with a social compact between such institutions and citizens. In September this year Enviu and Think Beyond Plastic™ kicked off an the Beyond Plastic Accelerator,  as a joint endeavor on the path of building the ecosystem for solutions to plastic pollution.

Participating enterprises received tailored mentorship by a team of experienced leaders in business, science and investments. The Beyond Plastic Innovation Showcase was the closing event of the accelerator were the entrepreneurs got the opportunity to pitch their plans in front of investors, experts, business leaders and governments.
