Rotterdam introduces
the first ‘Sustainable Dance Club’

Going out in a hip and trendy club and still be responsible. This idea forms the base for the Sustainable Dance Club. The presentation of this concept takes place at the 14th of October under the name ‘The Critical Mass’. It combines contemporary lifestyle with the latest ideas on sustainability. This club night is the kick off for the realization of the Sustainable Dance Club.

Producing and consuming in a responsible manner are no longer reserved for a small group. Enviu – innovators in sustainability - and Döll - studio for the art of building - have developed the Sustainable Dance Club together. An attractive way of clubbing combined with a low impact on the environment. Soon you can generate energy while dancing and flush the toilet with rainwater. The color of the walls changes as a reaction to the heat without any energy use and you can drink a biological beer at the water basin on the ‘relax roof’. These are just a few examples of what the Sustainable Dance Club can entail.

The program of The Critical Mass has been compiled by the bookers of CrimeJazz and Sound Architecture with the best soul, funk and electro. Enjoy the visuals of Urbi et Orbi and the innovative design of Döll. Be surprised by the culinary theatre of Mischa van Teeffelen. Customize your clothing by the honest fashion brand Kuyichi. Drink a responsible beer from the province of Limburg. Pick Oké fruit in The Garden of Delight with TruusTrendy and dance in the light of the energy efficient LED-wand from Philips. Be a part of The Critical Mass!

Enviu stimulates sustainable entrepreneurship and the architect agency Döll combines sustainable design with experiment and research. The Critical Mass is the kick off for reaching that critical point of no return. The chance to make a difference while having fun and it starts in Rotterdam.

Program
The program of The Critical Mass offers a scale of music styles combined with interactive design, culinary theatre, fashion, images and much more. The base for the program is to show the audience what the ‘eco chain of clubbing’ can entail. The Critical Mass wants to inspire, effect discussion and make people curious.

The music styles vary from soul to funk, from hiphop to brokenbeatz and from electro to disco. The line-up combines Netherlands' finest funk bands and eclectic djs with an international line up of cutting edge music. Rednas_audio brings you jazz and soul followed by the Dutch ‘Rockstarfunk’ band TrackAddicts. Frontman Ten, who also toured with George Clinton, was one of Gotcha!’s rappers. Jahi Sundance is the dj of Me’shell N’degeocello. This American dj can spin anything from hip-hop to jazz, 80’s, rock and punk and has had gigs in the famous Carnegie hall and the Lincoln Center. Dj-duo Starski & Tonic hooked up with fellow townsmen and multi-instrumentalist Othello (Bolchi, Foxylane). This leaded to the new hot project The Subs in which they dedicated themselves to making dirty, twisted, funky music for the open-minded. And finally djs Monica Electronica and Josz le Bon. They form the closing bridge between Electro, Disco and Rock.

The Sustainable Dance Club
The Sustainable Dance Club aims on bringing sustainability to young people in a contemporary way and introduce a new concept for club owners to react on the new trends within sustainability.
What could sustainability mean for you? As club owner, investor, politician, young professional or student. We invite you to join our challenge to explore the possibilities.

With the Sustainable Dance Club, Enviu and Döll have taken on the challenge of developing a sustainable clubbing environment. Next to physical and design solutions, we have also looked at the core business and processes of a club. You only have to imagine the amount of energy, warmth and humidity that a club crowd produces on such an evening to see the great potential. Furthermore important are the program of the club, the food and beverages that are served and creating the natural conditions in which drinking and flirting can take place. As thus a place is constructed in which people can make a sustainable contribution to their environment whilst enjoying life.

The concept of the Sustainable Dance Club gives meaning to sustainability within construction, entrepreneurship and clubbing for a young and trendsetting target group. Enviu and Döll are cooperating with the technical University of Delft, Off_Corso, the Development Board of Rotterdam and several experts within sustainable entrepreneurship and the creative industry (see also the partners below). For us, sustainable entrepreneurship is about making profit by minimizing the environmental and social impact of your company or even contribute to a solution for such an issue. It is all about balancing the three core elements of our society: people, profit and planet to be able to live in a future sustainable world. Doing this alone will be quite difficult. Co-operation based on a win-win situation is an important condition of sustainable entrepreneurship. Feel free to join us or contact us for more information.

More background
Consuming is leading in many Western youth cultures, often described as the “what’s in it for me” generation. The growing consciousness among young people that their choice (consuming behaviour) can influence their external environment can be directly derived from this. In this context choosing for sustainability is an emerging trend among young people in the Netherlands. Brands like American Apparel, Kuyichi, Utkpe are growing fast. If we could successfully translate this trend in a clubbing environment it could make a big difference for the development of sustainability.

Clubbing in itself is a non environment-friendly activity: just think about the waste of bottles, the amount of energy that is needed to heat and cool the place and to make all the lights work and about the superfluous flushing of toilets. Besides this, a club needs to refurbish quite regularly according to new trends to stay attractive to their audience, a hugely material-wasting endeavour. The challenge lies in how to minimize the footprint of the dance club on its environment without loosing its profitability and trendy image.

A second reason to focus on sustainability within a dance club context is to raise awareness for social and environmental issues among a broad and young target group. All too often the issue of sustainability is being debated among environmentalist or people with a deep green interest. If you want to make a difference a different approach is needed.

The big challenge of developing a sustainable dance club is to make sustainability sexy, attractive as well as cost-effective. We want to move beyond ideology.

Respect The Critical Mass

Hé get real!
