| 2. Facilitating tourism micro-enterprises in Southern Chile | ||||||||||||||||

It
has already been four weeks since we have left
Amsterdam, to leave to the "end of the world" and work
for Enviu concerning micro-enterprise development.
So far this has been quite a change because Puerto
Williams can not be compared to Amsterdam in any sense.
Living this remote place is a fascinating experience,
but we already feel at home and enjoy this new way of
living. Yet we are able to lighten up the fire with ease
in the morning, and we have gotten used to the many
weather changes during the day and siesta during the
afternoon.
Besides
adjusting to our new environment we
started our work for Enviu. The past weeks we have met a
lot of people and have obtained a good overview of the
situation. The context we work in is quite complex, but
therefore also a challenge. We have just presented our
activities for the coming months to the entrepreneurs
during their monthly meeting. This went quite well and
we are really excited to start working.
The work we will do here will cover various areas. First of all, we will facilitate in creating websites for the entrepreneurs individually. Everybody here wants a website, but knowledge about this is low. In order to make the process interactive and sustainable we will give various workshops on this subject. We have created a basic format and will work with the entrepreneurs to personalize this format. At the same time we will teach them how to maintain their website. We will start this month with the first workshop, which will include some marketing and some basic knowledge of websites and the possibilities. From thereon we will work further. Not so long ago a Tourism Board has been founded. This has been a great step forward, but there is still room for improvement. Cooperation between the different entrepreneurs is still low and the organisation needs to be fortified. At the moment we are working on creating a strategy and work plan for the organisation. This way we hope to improve cooperation and create a sense of unity. We will do this in close cooperation with the board of directors and the entrepreneurs. This way the organisation will have clear goals for the future and stand stronger as a organisation. Our work here has many different aspects and is therefore very exciting. We work in concrete activities such as creating websites, but at the same time we have to keep in mind the social aspects and the sustainability of the activities. Combining these different aspects can be quite difficult at times, but so far it has been nothing but a great challenge.
Up until now time has
passed really quickly and we have been really busy. So even
without al the luxury that a big city as Amsterdam has to offer,
we enjoy ourselves very well here at the end of the world!
