Offices as
‘living buildings’
At the
crossroad of unused office space supply and demand for
space by starting businesses, commuters, temporary
projects and social and educational organisations the
idea of ‘living office buildings’ emerged. Flexible
multi-purpose spaces (e.g. adaptable furniture,
flex-walls) and a web-based reservation system (e.g.
needforspace.com) would combine the optimization and
cost-reduction of office space use. Moreover inherent
business synergies and networking benefits could be
obtained by having different actors in one building. The
‘moments’ approach would adapt spaces to cater for
changing activities throughout the day, such as
meetings, fitness, sleeping, working, socializing,
eating and educating.
The friend-ship
Instead of the
mere export of the old cars from Rotterdam’s harbours to
Africa the ‘Friend-ship’ would pimp up and assemble
bio-fuelled and environment friendly cars off-shore. The
social element is to educate and employ Africans on-ship as
professional car assemblers. To cover costs car producers
could integrate this recycle-phase in the initial selling
price, hereby enhancing their sustainable responsibility and
brand image. Beside the car assembly the ship could cruise
high-end leisure customers to Africa, which would generate
an extra revenue stream.

Briefly, the Idea lounge has been a true inspiration outburst of likely-minded participants. The ideas have successfully been captured and could to some extend contribute to Enviu’s future facilitation of new issue-driven ventures. Our special thanks go out to Oriol Pasqual, the brainstorm facilitators and most importantly all participants for their creative input. Roy Wenting, Volunteer Events
